Alliance Attempts Sabotage of Vybz Kartel & Beenie Careers?

One876Entertainment reports on "rumours" in the dancehall community that dancehall selecta's are refusing to run Beenie and Kartel tunes out of loyality to Bounty Killer's "Alliance". The news follows on from female selecta DJ Sunshine's recent skirmish at a Movado gig.

The Irie FM DJ, and co-producer of 2005's Sunblock rhythm, recently played at the Spectrum stage-show at Uni. of West Indies' Student's Union. Upon playing a Beenie Man song she was met with a flying bottle from the crowd.

"I wasn't the one that was getting booed, it was the Beenie Man songs that they were booing an mi seh mi nah play partial. I can't be partial in the business because I'm a radio presenter, so when I come to a show, if a artiste is booked for the show mi nah play out dem tune an' when dem fi perform dem nuh have nutt'n fi sing. I was quite surprised, I didn't know that was going on in town, but I'm not into the politics, I just come to play good music" she is quoted as saying in the Jamaica Star.

Movado, who also performed at the same show, also had bottles thrown at him. The Star also carries quotes from Movado's Road Manager claiming that the bottle-throwing was a pre-arranged attack, going as far as to claim that the bottle-thrower had been paid to do so.

"While heading to Spectrum, wi get a call, an a man a seh him overhear a conversation seh any how Aidonia do the song, dem a guh mek a man fling a bottle an lik him, cause dem have it seh him a dis dem inna di song, but is just speaking the truth... Di artiste dem fi stop pay people fi fling bottle pon a nex artiste."

The hostile reaction is not limited to just Beenie Man records though with dancehall A-list deejay Vybz Kartel being ignored by some selecta's.

“Certain selectors who play at Bembe Thursdays and some round-the-town areas nah play no new Kartel, ah just pure Mavado, the only time dem play a Kartel is when dem know say dem caan go round the song…and ah eediat ting dat."

Greensleeve's A&R Mastermind To Part Company

Chris Cracknell, Greensleeve's A&R man for 30 years, is to part with the company in order to pursue other interests. In the years since the company was created, originally as a record shop in West Ealing, London, Greensleeves has become one of the world's largest reggae labels.

As well as releasing albums from most of Jamaica's top artists, Greensleeves also produce the profitable "Rhythm Album" series. He will vacate his role at the end of March.

Singing Melody Shot By Road-side Robbers

Jamaica Star reports that dancehall vocalist Singing Melody [Everton Hardware to his mother] was in a car driving along Hellshire Main Road in Portmore when his car was signalled to stop by unknown persons. It is claimed Hardware's vehicle accelerated from the scene rather than stopping, "wherein the gunmen opened a barrage of gunfire at the vehicle. "

The artist is reported to have received a single gunshot wound to the forearm, though says he will soon make a full recovery.

The attack comes five months after Singing Melody's son was shot in the Waltham Park area, back in September 2006.

Mr Wacky Two Memorial

Saturday night saw the memorial to late dancehall dancer Bogle went well according to reports in the Jamaica Star.

"When Sky Juice hit the stage, he started off with a few oldies but goodies. An old woman, who had apparently been touched by something, went on stage and started dancing ballet of some sort as That Girl Is Mine was being played.
After doing this to a few songs, she was ushered off stage by a one legged man. "

Elephant Man Porn Not Real

So the Elephant Man porn picture made it onto the internet via a wide range of Jamaica-related forums and websites. Predictably the story has widely been accepted as a fake, much like the 'Elephant Man Has AIDS' rumour of last year.

Those still wishing to see the image can view it here.

Comments left on a DancehallReggae thread report the possible real male in the image to be porn star Max Black. There's also a thread with a poll, at the time of writing 86% didn't believe it was Elephant Man.

Rebel Saluta, Sizzla & Dash, & Ele Compromising Phone Pics

In an interview feautred on AllHipHop.com, Damian Dash responds to the question "Didn’t I just hear Sizzla signed to you?" by saying;

"Sizzla has his own label. I got him the connect, and I’ll work with him and do anything I can. But honestly, I’m not in the day-to-day grind like that, so I wouldn’t say he’s my artist. I think he is an entity that couldn’t be signed. If you look at the power that that man has, it would be hard for me to say he’s my artist."

Meanwhile the Jamaica Star carries an article regarding reggae singer Sanchez's non-appearance at the Rebel Salute 2007 show. Sanchez's camp say that him, his wife (also his manager) and his publicist stood in the mud backstage (classy!) all night but nobody called him up to perform.

The promoter, Tony Rebel, says however that after paying Sanchez $150,000 but not getting a performance (Sanchez left the venue @ 7am, ) they are now making excuses so they don't have to reimburse the $150k.

The Star also reports that the Marley's have arranged for "Smile Jamaica 2007" to be held on Saturday February 10th in Nine Miles, St Annes, Jamaica. Read more here.

Strangest news of all comes from YardFlex. In an article headed "Suss pon Toppa Suss - Keep Your Business to Yourself" they claim a photo of dancehall deejay Elephant Man engaged in a sexual act is circulating on cellphones around the Kingston area.

"The pictures have the deejay ah nibble pon a girl batty jaw, while him hand dem all over the girl parts dem. People nuh stop send it to each other phone. Bwoy, it nuh look so good at all. "

YardFlex do not carry the image but those interested should keep an eye on this thread over at DancehallRegae.com.

Tuesday Tings

Nothing much happening in the news.

YardFlex reports that Tony Matterhorn's "Dutty Wine", Gyptian's "Serious Times" and BabyCham's "Ghetto Story" all got repped in Vibe Magazine's "Top 60 Best Songs of 2006". The songs placed at #60, #21 and #7 respectively. "Ghetto Story" also clocked in @ #14 in the Rolling Stone "100 Best Songs of 2006" chart.

Apart from that the Jamaica Gleaner carries an item about Vybz Kartel's and others' no-show at Vybz Kartel Live Lyrics in St Andrew on Saturday.

"At 5:30 most were on their way out of the venue when one man declared, "turn off the dis bc, a idiot dem tek man fah." Another woman shouted, " Dem nah get nuh more a my rs money a dah place." While another man refused to pick up his bar tab because he did not get what he paid for.

"Aidonia and Kartel said they were on their way in the same car coming from another show in the country. With all the rain, dem seh di car skid and they can't make it." said the distressed promoter.

Zombies, Dates, and Gunshots

It seems the Kartel vs Mavado war is still going, if reports on one876entertainment are to be believed. They report that there was a shooting in a St Andrews area where Mavado hangs out.

“It was a drive-by shooting that happened at about 8:30 p.m. on Sunday, and eyewitnesses said that it was a black car that was seen leaving the crime scene. A man was shot and injured, he was shot in the buttocks and later released from the hospital. Right now, it is still just a rumour about the shooting being a result of a feud between two entertainers,” a member of the Constant Spring C.I.B, told One876Entertainment.com.

The article lacks any source linking Mavado or Vybz Kartel to the incident or the scene at the time of the attack, except to say that Mavado arrived at the Cassava Piece gully bank to see a black car fleeing the area.

One876Entertainment also carries a reports that reggae singer KC Jockey is to star as a zombie in the forthcoming Will Smith movie "I Am Legend".

"I'm very happy to do my third film in five months. God is great, He is blessing me all the way so that I can help others in the long run. Right now I waiting on the filming schedule which I think shooting will be in a few weeks. "

Finally, the Jamaica Star are offering the chance to go on a date with one of 2006's brightest new reggae stars, Christopher Martin. Ladies feeling lucky should click here.

Sunday News Sweep

The Jamaica Star reports on Tony Matterhorn's "Dutty Wine" song being awarded top spot in the BBC's"1Xtra Dancehall Hot 10 for 2006". BBC 1Xtra is the UK's only nationwide radio station playing urban music. Hinting at the people who claimed the Dutty Wine song was a threat to worldwide health, they quote Matterhorn as saying;

"Is jus certain people a try fight di song, but too much people love it, dem a fight a losing battle. Dat's di biggest ting coming out of our country fi di year. Di kids, even two year-old a seh 'Dutty Wine', suh how yuh a guh stop dat?"

To read the full 1Xtra Dancehall Hot 10 for 2006 and further commets from Matterhorn click

The Jamaica Gleaner meanwhile, in an article entitled "Reggae The Hassidic Way", reports on the news that Jewish reggae singer Mattisyahu has received a nomination in the reggae category for the 49th annual Grammy Awards. Other acts in the category are Buju Banton, Sly and Robbie, Ziggy Marley and UB40. They quote Mattisyahu as saying;

"First of all, let me say there are certain people like Buju Banton who had a huge influence on me and someone I really respect... I'm not really familiar with Ziggy and UB40's work."

So that is a reggae Grammy nomination going to a Jewish guy who doesn't know any songs by one of the sons of Bob Marley OR one of the biggest ever selling reggae groups. Hmmm...

Finally, over at YardFlex they are carrying an article about Sean Paul and Rihanna being voted "Most-Played Reggae Artist" and "Most-Played R&B Song" respectively at the "2006 Napster Awards". Sean Paul also got the "Most-Played Reggae Song" for his song "Temperature" on Snow Cone's Applause rhythm. For the full piece click here.
