Freddy McGregor - "Dah Act Deh Affi Go Re-write"

Controversy surrounding the Reggae Compassion Act continues to roll on. Now, legendary foundation artist Freddie McGregor has joined in, saying that the act needs to be re-written so that it makes the distinction between dancehall and reggae.

"Jamaica has developed two genres of music, reggae and dancehall. Wi all embrace dancehall, because is a part of our culture, but di problem is dat it seems like every time there is a problem wid di dancehall community, dem waan get reggae involved an eradicate.

But there is no reggae artiste signature there, and mi nuh hear nuh gay a advocate 'gainst we. Me want dem people deh fi first an foremost change di word 'reggae' to 'dancehall.

Dem haffi mek a differentiation, cause dat would a include me inna di ting, an me an my peers nuh have no bangarang wid nobody suh how we a get drawn in? It look like a deliberate ploy fi get rid a reggae an a from long time dem a try."

The Star also quotes T.O.K, who recorded the anti-gay song "Chi Chi Man". They are also saying that a revised document is needed.

"While we do agree with some of the statements made in the Reggae Compassionate Act, it is not a hundred per cent representative of the group (TOK) and we refuse to put our signature to anything we will not abide by"

DaVille: "Clamp Down On The Bootlegging"

"I don't think enough is being done to clamp down on the bootlegging people. It's so out of hand and impossible to curtail now that music has gone into a different league and people can even go online and download music for free from places like limewire, and there is no ending to that"

So says Daville. In an excellent article by The Gleaner regarding online piracy and street-level bootlegging, they highlight the difficulty Jamaican artists are having making a decent living. Daville continues:

"Well, right now, my album sales are going pretty well, (but) not as well as I think it should be doing. This is because of the whole bootlegging thing. The people here mostly buy burnt CDs and that doesn't count. The artiste doesn't get any income from that on the monitor of sales. What I notice is that they will more buy an overseas artiste's CD in the original, but buy the bootleg for the local artiste."

But what do the bootleggers themselves think? Do they feel amy remorse or guilty about selling CDs? Apparently not. The Gleaner quotes a bootlegger called "Andre" who suggests that his bootlegging doesn't actually affect the artists at all since revenue from stageshows are what an artist such as Daville really makes $$ on.

"Well, the artiste dem really don't have no problem enuh, cause the record shop dem still buy dem album and dem mek money offa dem show dem, so dem still a rinse inna money."

But what about the background people who helped create that CD in the first place? The producer, the engineer, ... the cleaner? Cleveland Brown, Chairman of the Recording Industry of Jamaica as well as being half of legendary production duo Steeley & Cleevie, says:

"Apart from the artistes, you have different persons associated with the music... The executive producer is the person that spends a lot of money into the product, and when you produce but you cannot see the profits, it becomes a problem. Then the musicians don't make any money, everyone employed there, from the technician to the cleaning lady, is affected"

Cleevie also points out that supply must equal demand. How many times have you heard a big tune on the radio/online but haven't been able to find a retail version? Or if you do find an official copy its only available on a badly-pressed, imported vinyl 45!

In a digital era, the reggae industry must provide digital-quality media if it ever wants to beat the bootleggers.

Buju Banton - Doesn't Condone Gay Bashing

The pandemonium surrounding three of reggae's biggest artists signing the Reggae Compassion Act continues. Sizzla, Beenie Man and Capleton were all reported as having signed the Act.

Beenie Man is now claiming that he didn't sign anything and that "maybe the promoters signed it". All three artists' reputations have taken a battering recently once the situation made it on to large reggae forums such as DancehallReggae.com.

But now Buju Banton has added his name into the mix by releasing a statement to One876Entertainment saying:

I was a child when I wrote those lyrics... but let me make it clear that I do not encourage or condone violence towards any human being, and that includes our gay brothers and sisters.

Current comments on the article don't seem supportive of Buju:

"MI FEEL SHAME. JAH KNOWS. A DEM ARTIST YAH A REPRESENT JAMAICA MORALS AND CULTURE FI YEARS, AND NOW A SELL THEM SOUL"

"All a di dread dem a sell out, caa no rasta naa bow, especially to no batty boy. "

One poster even posts new names for the artists involved:

"New name for the sell outs.. shezzla, caplethong, queenieman and juju..... dam battyboys.. guh suck unnuh mumma."

Idonia NOT Part of Portmore Empire

Turns out the report posted on the website One876Entertainment isn't as true as it suggests. The Jamaica Star today reports pretty much the opposite. Seems that Kartel's Portmore Empire and Idonia's J.O.P crew are just friends.

"Donia nuh part of di Empire, a Kartel a lead out Portmore Empire an Aidonia a lead out JOP, suh is like two company merge, cause memba Aidonia seh 'Addi a him daddy' an suh yuh find seh wi roll wid Portmore Empire more while an Donia wi seh JOP Empire, but him a nuh part a di Portmore Empire" says Idonia's brother and manager.

Daville & Sean Paul Shoot Video For "Always On My Mind"

YardFlex today reports that Sean Paul and Da'Ville have recently shot a video for Daville's monster hit "Always On My Mind".

The song has been around for many months now, but the with a Sean Paul remix [almost] guaranteed to break the song in international waters, things are looking good for DaVille.

YardFlex reports that "The concept of this video, directed by Jamaica's own Ras Kassa, tells the tale of a classic love, but depicts how sometimes the relationship is not always picture perfect. The setting is midday on the rainy busy streets of Kingston, Jamaica. Amidst all the trials and tribulations that occur, the video reflects how Da'Ville is always thinking about his love and how she is "always on his mind". Sean Paul cameos alongside Da'Ville and expresses similar sentiments about his loved one."

Vybz Kartel new One2Watch

Brand new One2Watch over in the sidebar! Vybz Kartel - "Bruk Out"

This time coming from Vybz Kartel on a riddim called Two Thousand And Seventies Riddim. Sounding like one of those limited-pressing bootleg 45s that turn up once in a while, its a combination of 1970's disco-funk and millenium slackness.

There's also a Left Side & Esco on the riddim, that tune goes by the name of "Stamina Man"

Idonia Joins Kartel's Portmore Empire

One876Entertainment reports that Idonia is now rolling with the Portmore Empire, the collective headed by Vybz Kartel.

Ray Darwin "People's Choice" Video

If you read the post below this one you will see that this song just entered the 1Xtra Dancehall Chart @ #10. The song has been around a while (the 45's have been available since around January) but the song really comes into its own league when the sun is shining, which is just about happening here in UK.

The riddim is a re-cut of a Studio One classic called the Mean Girl rhythm. Brilliant example of how truly great reggae never ages!

Dancers - New Skool Robbing Old Skool

Modern dancers are stealing old dance moves and calling them their own. That's the view of an article posted on the The Star's website today.

"Dem just a name ova a dance and say a fi dem own ... Mi nuh know if people nuh notice say 'rum ram' and 'stookie' a di same dance, is just dat wid 'rum ram' you lift up your foot," says Ice, of Black Roses Crew.

In the ultra-competitive world of dancehall dancers, creating a popular new dance can make you famous overnight.

"This whole thing causing a lot of controversy in the dance right now. That's what happened with 'tek weh yuhself' that Black Blingaz made and Ova Mars come with 'paper bag'. It's basically the same thing, but with little changes made and everybody know that the dance was basically created by Black Blingaz. So even though people might still do the dance and call it the 'paper bag', them will still know it was 'tek weh yuhself'." says Taz, of Timeless Dancers.

Perfect Is New One2Watch!

There's a new One2Watch, this time from up-and-coming artist Perfect. He's been around for a while but never really broke through into the big-league. With a distinctive flow and voice, he's one of the better artists currently bubbling under. His most memorable hit to date was "Babylon Guweh" on Yahbell Entertainments' "Fire & Rain Riddim"

Sitting on top of a tight US-produced one-drop riddim and borrowing a little from Bob & Marcia's reggae classic, its easily one of the best songs on the riddim. The rhythm itself is produced by Philadub Recs., based in Philadelphia.

The song is streamable from the sidebar. To hear a promotional mix of other songs on the riddim check Philadub's MySpace profile!

Tight Pants 'Chafe" Real Dancers

Today's Gleaner has an interesting article about how people assume that dancers who wear tight pants are gay.

"As soon as you see a man in tight pants you think they are gay. Mi nuh like see man in 'spany'. Mi nuh like see man inna di long boot dem either. I don't respect men who dress like that because I just think they are gay and using women as a front to prove they are not," says a dancehall follower, Denecia Williams.

Another dancehall attendee is quoted

"You may not be a gay; when you dress like that you give off the impression that you are gay. It's the same thing when they bleach out their face and cream out their hair. Might be they have feminine side that they want to come out and the way they dress is the way they choose to do it."

Quoting dancer Ice, from Timeless Dancers squad,:

"As long as is a basic jeans and it have a pattern and style and you just have to go with the flow ... When (a selector) say 'hey tight pants bwoy, mi waah kill uno!' yuh haffi mek sure your ting (pants) straight. You have some dancers out there who wear di whole spandex jeans and capri and mi nuh know why."

Ice also says that flamboyant dancers run the risk of taking a beating, recalling a rumour of a Montego Bay dancer being attacked.

"Well mi hear of one case where (a dancer) who come from Montego Bay get beat, 'cause people a say him a batty man. Him wear tight pants and all that and the way him dutty wine, Shabada nuh have nothing pon him. One time people rush dat and him haffi lif outta dat," Ice said.
